This section on sustainable transport contains information and resources to help people make transport choices that lead to a better New Zealand for current and future generations.

Sustainable vehicles

  • Fuelsaver website: Find out how much you spend on fuel, and how much you can save.
  • Rightcar website: Choose the right car online by comparing safety, fuel efficiency and emissions data for new and used cars. The site also includes information on fuel economy ratings, vehicle pollution and emissions standards, and safety features.

Travel progammes and planning

  • Travel behaviour change programmes: encouraging people to travel using sustainable modes of transport (public transport, on foot, by bike, or by car share).
  • Travel plan guidelines: resources to help you set up your own Walking school bus, workplace or school travel plan.
  • Workplace travel plan case studies: successful workplace travel plans.
  • Your safe driving policy: resource to help New Zealand employers keep their staff safe on the roads and improve the efficiency and sustainability of their operations.
  • Travel to and from school: information for parents, caregivers and teachers about travel to and from school. Includes:
    • Walking to school: this has a lot of benefits for children, their caregivers and the environment. It also means less traffic congestion around the school gate.
    • School buses: tips for increasing safety on and around school buses.
    • Being roadsmart for school: suggestions for parents about walking and cycling to school.
    • School traffic safety team manual: a training manual to help school traffic safety teams – school patrols, traffic wardens and bus wardens – maintain their outstanding safety record.
  • Walking and cycling: information for cyclists and pedestrians, and resources for organisations wanting to encourage people to bike and walk.
