Travel behaviour change programmes encourage voluntary change in travel behaviour by providing incentives for people to use sustainable modes of travel, thus reducing the need for car travel in our communities.
Walking school buses, Walk to School Week, school travel plans and workplace travel plans (PDF, 193 KB) are all examples of travel behaviour change programmes that are being developed by communities all over New Zealand.
Councils throughout New Zealand are also being encouraged to develop local sustainability-related activities and projects in their communities. There are many different approaches that councils could take, and these are discussed in the resource: Promoting community focused sustainable transport projects (PDF, 172 KB).
In July 2006, Land Transport NZ took over national coordination of travel behaviour change programmes from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.
Land Transport NZ will be building on several years of involvement in this area, specifically chairing the national travel behaviour change advisory group, to provide assistance, advice and funding to approved organisations so they can help people and communities with their own travel planning.
The 2006/07 financial year will be a transitional year for Land Transport NZ as we develop a strategic direction for leading the national programme.
If you are from an approved organisation, you should contact your local NZ Transport Agency regional office to discuss travel behaviour change initiatives.
If you are interested in finding out about travel behaviour change activities in your community, please contact your local council for more information on how you can get started.
